Fort Lauderdale Area Information

fort lauderdale area informationFort Lauderdale has always been justifiably proud of its beaches, all 23 miles of them. Locals and visiting beach lovers are not the only ones who have noticed, though. Since 1999, the Clean Beaches Council, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. has recognizing responsible beach management. The organization's highest award is its "Blue Wave Beach Certification." Fort Lauderdale has received Blue Wave certification for each year of the program.

The annually reviewed certification is based on Environmental Protection Agency water quality standards, beach conditions, safety, service, habitat conservation, public information, and education and erosion management. This is the first national beach certification program in the country. The Council's program is intended to enlist communities in the protection of their beach resources. Annually across the country, two billion visits are made to U.S. beaches by more than 180 million people, contributing over $640 billion to our nation's economy. The certification has been granted to Greater Fort Lauderdale as a whole, including beaches in Hollywood, Dania, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Pompano Beach. The aware rates these beaches as the top of their class in cleanliness and safety. Fort Lauderdale puts a great deal of effort into keeping its beaches beautiful via agencies like the Broward County Department of Planning and Environmental Protection as well as through private conservation efforts.
